OK, Not recommendable... June 7, 2010 patricks_video234 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
Thomas used to focus on more grown-up readers as well as the younger. I thought this book would be more like the old annuals, focused on older fans, and was quite disappointed when reading it. It is basic and simple, maybe satisfy young children, but not older fans.
thomas the tank engine review February 24, 2010 dojj (London) What can I say?
I expected it to be like the normal grown up Haynes manuals, but this was a bit of a change from the norm and it has taken pride of place on the bookshelves of my kids rooms, although that may change soon.
It's got enough detail in it to keep kids happy and amused, and it's got enough detail in it to keep adults amused and entertained, showing you how to build a steam engine, what goes where, why Thomas is a tank engine etc.
Possibly a little too complicated for a 4 year old, much too complicated for an 18 month old, but with enough pictures to keep them entertained while they flick through the pages.
The crowning glory for my copy though, is the fact that the cover is the right way around, while the pages are all upside down inside, so I'm not sure if it's a faulty book or it's meant to be that way. I didn't realise until I had a look for myself.
It gets full marks from my son (because it's got trains in it), and my daughter (because it's got trains in it), and me (because it's got technical info in it).
Very Good December 27, 2009 S. Martin I bought this for my 3 year old great nephew as he is a big fan of Thomas & Co, haven't had any feedback from them yet but I did have a look before wrapping it and thought it looked quite interesting.
Thomas - the inside story. December 23, 2009 DangermouseZilla (Doncaster, Yorkshire, UK.) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
This is a great little book for Thomas fans, as well as being a fun book it's also pretty informative...
The front cover of this owner's guide made me laugh with the classic Hayne's Guide styling, I'm sure it will catch many a parents eye and make them smile too. The contents of the book doesn't follow the same technical level of detail as a Hayne's manual - but you wouldn't expect that in a childrens book!
The Thomas owners annual give brief overviews of some of Thomas' friends such as their jobs in Sodor and how many wheels they have. It doesn't mention all of the trains but the familiar old ones are there. As well as little fact about the trains the book contains information about how trains work and contains diagrams (including cross sections) to show the inner workings of a steam engine.
In a nutshell: This makes a nice change to the usual Christmas Annual and it's a bit different - instead of stories and puzzles you get an insight into the working life of the trains in Sodor and it should help to further a childs understanding of the technology behind the engines. It is quite a thin book though, there aren't many pages - but it still manages to stimulate interest. It would be nice to see a bigger version of this book which acts as a nice companion to the TV series.
