Thomastastic book! July 28, 2010 Shain (Leeds, UK) While this isn't our favourite book, our very-nearly-three-year-old LOVES it. He got it at Christmas, and I swear we have read at least 2 (of the 12) stories EVERY night since. In 7 months, he hasn't got fed up with these stories. He likes other stories as well, but it's always these he insists on hearing. He makes the animal noises whenever an animal appears on the page, and he knows if you miss out so much as a word of the story. The illustrations are the later, rather "cartoony" ones where Thomas looks bright and cheerful with a wide open face and a very slightly dippy expression, but that's fine. There are 12 stories, with each concentrating on a main character but featuring several more. There's a little summary at the beginning of each story, which can act as a "trailer" for the next night's story, which seems to go down well. They're all about "chums" together, who fall out sometimes but come through for each other in the end. They're about promises made and kept, little engines who learn their lessons and try not to get too big for their buffers. And they're about trains and buses and all the other machines that fascinate little children generally, and little boys particularly. And that's why our son loves them, and why my husband doesn't mind reading them every single evening! Lovely hardback format, lovely sized text, great illustrations and heartily recommended.
PS We found it cheapest on Asda on-line. Ssshh - don't tell Amazon!
