Small town Humour June 14, 2010 W. B. Mackay (Orkney UK) Humorous, well written, entertaining and easy reading.
You will all find people you recognise in your town or area but the story will keep your interest till the end.
Everyone should have a Minty in their life May 25, 2010 Marian Gerry (Pertshire) What happens next?. Rosie is a great story teller, she has us smiling as she brings to life the messes we can all find ourselves in despite or because of our best efforts. Her sharp observation but underlying compassion for our human frailites brings brings something special to her storytelling. Everyone should have a Minty in their life and long may she continue.

Hard to put down March 22, 2010 M. Garvey (Nottingham United Kingdom) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Exactly my sort of book - charcters we've all met ( somewhere, sometime ) and all believeable. I am not a Scot but I have visited a number of times and have stayed in small places just like this. I loved the sharp observation, the direct - and indirect - wit and particularly admire the resistance by Rosie Wallace to any temptation to over-complicate the story ( something that, in my view, many authors fall prey to )
The writing style reminds me of Lisa Jewell and Mike Gayle, writers who have both written a number of books over recent years. I have read and enjoyed them all, and I look forward to Rosie Wallace joining them in similar output.
I understand that this is a first novel for Rosie - in which case, it's a sensational start.
Chinese whispers and Chocolate cake March 15, 2010 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
This book is a well written and enjoyable story. Characters well drawn and believable. Some threads of the story were satisfactorily predictable, others had a nice twist at the end. The chocolate cake episode had me in stitches. I look forward to the next book by this author.
A dose of nostalgia for small town Scotland! March 14, 2010 Helga Loverseed (Quebec) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
I'm an expatriate Scot currently living in Canada. Recently, on my way back from the UK, I picked up this book in the hope of whiling away a couple of hours on a transatlantic flight - and while away the hours it did! It was a fun, entertaining read but what I liked most of all was the humor that the author brought to the story. I found myself laughing out loud (much to the consternation of several of my fellow passengers!) as a turn of phrase tickled my funny bone. The only 'down' side, if it could be called that, is that A Small Town Affair made me feel nostalgic and homesick, just as I thought I'd got over my goodbyes.... The characters were so well drawn (warts and all) and the community seemed so real, that I became completely absorbed in the world that I'd left behind. Bravo Rosie Wallace!
